Walking Alone in Nature - Persephone People

I’ve recently had this piece published by Persephone People. Inspired by the Greek goddess, Persephone, the online magazine publishes stories about the natural world, strong women, mental health and overcoming adversity.

“I stop to check the map, tilting it to match the land in front of me. A wisp of breath floats over the crumpled paper. Mist hovers around ankles and over fields. There’s a Yellow Warning out for fog and I want to be home before the horizon blocks out the sun, but first I pause to soak in the last sounds of the afternoon. A great tit see-saw squeaks in the hawthorn. A flock of crawking corvids shuffle and bustle around their roost for the night. I haven’t seen anyone except for a fluorescent yellow jacket walking its dog twenty minutes ago. Nobody has bothered me, unless you count the blue tit that ‘tee-ha-ha’-ed as I slid on the mud earlier. That’s the beauty of being out alone, away from to-do lists, routines and people: nothing here is about me.”
